When I was in Anuradhapura in Sri Lanka, I visited Mihintale, a mountain peak near the city. Sri Lankans believe it was here that the Buddhist monk Mahinda met King Devanampiyatissa, which marked the beginning of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. Today, Mihintale is a pilgrimage site with several religious monuments and abandoned structures.
As you climb up, you'll pass remnants of old structures where you can stop and explore if you like. But the best part of Mihintale awaits at the top of the stairs. After the climb, you'll reach a large platform where you can soak in the breathtaking views of the surroundings.
During my visit, I was soon joined by local musicians whose drum and flute added to the atmosphere. They played traditional music as we enjoyed the sunset.
Oh btw, you might spot some grey langur monkeys hanging around, which are pretty cool!
