Just 4.5 km from the entrance of the Namib-Naukluft National Park lies the Sesriem Canyon, a natural wonder shaped by the Tsauchab River over millions of years. Unlike much of the landscape surrounding it, this canyon can hold water throughout the year, making it a rare oasis in the desert.
The name 'Sesriem' comes from early Afrikaans explorers who found themselves needing to tie together six (“ses”) leather straps (“riem”) to lower buckets down into the canyon to collect water.
Visitors can park their vehicles nearby and take a walk through the canyon’s winding paths. Some parts are quite narrow, with stunning rock formations.
