Stilt Fishermen of the South
The main beaches where you can find people practicing stilt fishing are in Koggala and Ahangama.
Stilt Fishermen at Koggala
Koggala is a small coastal town, situated at the edge of a lagoon on the south coast of Sri Lanka, Stilt fishing is a method of fishing unique to the island country of Sri Lanka. The fishermen sit on a cross bar called a ‘petta’ tied to a vertical pole and driven into the sand a few meters offshore. From this high position, the fishermen casts his line, and waits until a fish comes along to be caught. At sunrise and sunset they come out to fish, but it is only in the morning that they get a good catch. In the evening they gather mostly to entertain the tourists who want to capture their pictures.

Cactus Ahangama - this place is a vibe!
Cactus Ahangama is a laid back café, along the ocean in the south of Sri Lanka, serving delicious healthy food for brunch/lunch & coffee time. This place is such a vibe, I absolutely loved the relaxed & aesthetic atmosphere here. It’s the perfect spot for an excellent lunch and to unwind with an amazing beach view. The place is quite popular and therefore it can be very busy at moments, so sometimes there can be some waiting time. It’s also a popular place by digital nomads to come here and work. Cactus Ahangama is open from 8AM to 5PM every day. There is also a cute shop with clothes, accessories, cosmetics & more (insta: @pricklypear.ahangama ) For parking, there is a little bit of space at the front for bikes and scooters.
Traditional dinner at Big Belly Mirissa
End the day back in Mirissa town with some traditional food at Big Belly. The menu is huge, too many options to be honest, but the kottu was the best we have had in Sri Lanka. It comes with five sauces at all different spice levels. The spring rolls are a must too!
