The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is often considered one of the best day hikes in the world, definitely a MUST-DO in New Zealand. The crossing is around 20 kms long and located in Tongariro National Park on New Zealand's North Island. Highlights were volcanic craters, colorful mineral lakes, and expansive panoramas of the surrounding area 🌋.
The trail begins at Mangatepopo Valley and ascends to the saddle between Mt. Tongariro and Mt. Ngauruhoe. Mt. Ngauruhoe is also known as Mount Doom from the "Lord of the Rings" films 💍. One of the highlights of the crossing is the Red Crater, but you need to be lucky with the weather to see this beautiful creature. Descending from the Red Crater, hikers encounter the stunning Emerald Lakes, known for their brilliant turquoise waters, created by volcanic minerals 🩵. One of the most incredible views we've seen in our lives, but also for this one you need to be patience because clouds sometimes cover them. Go search for the perfect lunch spot next to the Emerald Lakes and enjoy the stunning views. When we started hiking again and the trail winds its way down, we were treated to breathtaking views of Lake Rotoaira and Lake Taupo in the distance. The journey ends at the Ketetahi car park, where a shuttle was waiting to pick us up and drive us back to the start 🚕.
