Activity
€ 50 - 100
The idyllic village of Vila Franca do Campo is best known for the almost perfectly round crater island of the same name, Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo. This islet is a submerged volcano that belongs to the larger island of São Miguel, located just 1 km from the southern coast. Thanks to its convenient location, an adventurous kayaking trip is a must during your visit to the Azores!
You can experience kayaking with Fun Activities Azores Adventure, a team that stands out for its focus on ecologically responsible travel.
👉 The Half-Day Kayaking Trip:
You meet at the port of Vila Franca do Campo. Once the group is complete (max 10 people), the briefing and introductions begin. You receive a waterproof bag to store your valuables. When you are fully prepared, you step into the kayak and head toward the crater island.
Accompanied by two guides, you kayak to the island. Unlike river kayaking, sea kayaking presents additional challenges due to tides, waves, and weather conditions, making it sometimes quite demanding!
After about 30 minutes of kayaking, you reach the crater island. With the guides, you explore hidden caves. The current can be strong in this area, so you receive clear instructions on how to maneuver safely to avoid the rocks.
Depending on the season of your visit, you may enter the island (access is only possible from June 15 to October 11). You can snorkel, swim, hike, or simply relax there. After a short period of free time, you regroup to return to the port.
