Discovering the Temples and History of Anuradhapura
€ 1 - 50
Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s ancient capitals, is a must-visit destination for history and culture enthusiasts. This UNESCO World Heritage site is home to fascinating ruins, sacred Buddhist temples, and stupas that date back over 2,000 years.
The entrance fee for the temple complex is around 3,000 Sri Lankan Rupees, which gives you access to several significant sites, including the famous Sri Maha Bodhi tree, the oldest living tree in the world. You’ll also see massive stupas like the Ruwanwelisaya, which holds the title of the largest stupa in the world.
We arranged a guide through our hotel, which was very helpful. Many hotels in Anuradhapura offer this service, where the guide picks you up by tuk-tuk and drops you off at your hotel afterward. Having a guide when visiting this site is essential – they provide valuable insight into the rich history making your visit much more meaningful.
A tip for your visit: make sure to bring socks, especially during the hottest part of the day. You’ll be walking barefoot on hot surfaces as it’s mandatory to remove shoes before entering sacred sites.
