Discovering Évora - World Heritage

Our roadtrip officially took off this day. After spending two days in Lisbon, we picked up our car from Europcar and headed to our second stop: Évora. A city which is mentioned in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

Car pick-up at Europcar

At just a ten-minute walk from our apartment in Lisbon, we found a Europcar location. We checked-out from Patio São Vicente and went to pick up our car and made our way over to Évora. From Lisbon, it took us about a 1.5 hour drive to get to our next stop.

Checking-in at Hilton Garden Inn Évora

Upon arrival we made our way over to the hotel immediately, it was 35 degrees and we desperately needed some refreshment. Our rooms were not ready yet but we could make use of the rooftop pool. We relaxed for a couple of hours and after we were able to check-in to our rooms we got ready to make our way over to the city of Évora, a UNESCO world heritage location.

Discovering the Historic Centre of Évora

Évora is a tiny city, so just one day is enough to discover the important landmarks. One of the most astonishing highlights is the Chapel of Bones, which is made out of the bones of the previous locals of the city (there's a total of 5000 skulls used to build this chapel). The goal of building this chapel was to convey the message of temporariness and fragility of human life. Quite sinister, but also very impressive of course. After having visited this we made our way into the city center to discover the cathedral and roman temple in the city. The historical elements make this city a piece of world heritage.

The Dinner Street of Évora

One street in Évora you cannot miss, since it is packed with tables for the restaurants that are located there. A busy but vibrant atmosphere. I do definitely recommend to reserve a spot beforehand if you would like to have dinner at one of the better restaurants. We did not have a reservation and could not be seated anywhere we really preferred.
