Japan

Start your day at Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
Kick off your morning with a visit to the magical Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Walking among the towering bamboo stalks feels like stepping into another world. The beauty of this place is truly unmatched, we’ve never seen anything like it before. Conquering the whole forest takes 15 to 30 minutes, unless you stop to take pictures once in a while ;-)
Discover Otagi Nenbutsu-ji
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji is truly unique among Japan's temples. What makes it special are the 1200 moss-covered Rakan statues, each with its own distinct personality. The entrance fee is only 400 yen, which is about € 2,40. So no reason not to visit this lesser-known temple!
Explore Daikaku-ji
Next up is Daikaku-ji, a peaceful temple that used to be an imperial residence. This serene spot is perfect for escaping the crowds and enjoying some tranquility. It truly is a hidden gem, when we visited we had the whole place to ourselves. You can wander through the temple complex, or stroll around the pond area. Every corner of Daikaku-ji offers something special, it’s also a great place for photographers and nature lovers!
Sample local specialties at Nishiki Market
Your next stop is Nishiki Market, also known as Kyoto’s Kitchen. This lively indoor market is the perfect place to sample local specialties like eel skewers, dango (rice flour dumplings), and taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes).

End your day at Fushimi Inari Taisha
Make your way to Fushimi Inari Taisha, the last stop of the day. Famous for its thousands of vibrant red torii gates, this Shinto shrine offers a mesmerizing pathway that winds up the hillside. While many visitors only explore the first section, we highly recommend going all the way to the top to avoid the crowds. Just be prepared for a bit of a walk, as the full hike takes about two hours. But trust us, it’s worth it for the stunning photos and the serene atmosphere. And the best part? Admission is completely free!
