Ofenloch, Nesslau, Switzerland

Eastern Switzerland's Hidden Gem

This hikes takes you to the Ofenloch, known as Eastern Switzerland's Grand Canyon. Hidden between Neckertal and Toggenburg, north of the majestic Säntis massif, this remarkable gorge remains a well-kept secret among hikers and adventurers. Embark on a journey from the Schwägalp (pas), where the cable car starts to Säntis. From here, the trail winds through picturesque meadows, forests, and serene pastures, eventually leading you over Chräzeren Pass and into the heart of Ofenloch. Here, you'll encounter cascading waterfalls and the Ofenloch itself, resembling a colossal pizza oven, which lends its name to the area (Ofenloch = Ovenhole). The entire canyon landscape is a delightful surprise, offering a diverse and captivating hiking experience. As you traverse the terrain, relish in panoramic views of Zurich Oberland and the Alpsteinmassif, which looks a bit like the Dolomites in Italy. While most of the trail is well-marked, be cautious of slippery mud, particularly around the narrow sections near the gorge and Ofenloch. Loose stones and occasional erosion demand careful footing, especially in wet conditions. This hike is best suited for sure-footed adventurers without fear for heights.

Walenstadt, Switzerland

Sleep next to the Walensee

After the hike in Ofenloch, we drove to a campingspot near the Walensee, all equipped with our tent and sleeping bags. We’ve placed our tent on a serene spot, with a magnificent view on the lake, and immediately also on the area for the walk next day. But first, take some rest in this well equipped camping place with clean toilets, rooms to use for diner and a small local shop. We've discovered Walenstadt which is nearby the camping spot and had a drink in one of the cosy bars.
