Zagreb, the underrated capital of Croatia
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is a city that most tourists skip since most people head straight down to the coastline to visit more popular places like Split and Dubrovnik. However Zagreb is definitely worth a visit, this charming city has lots to see and you get to enjoy it without the crowds.

Croatian National Theatre
In the morning head out to the beautiful Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. This yellow baroq style building was built in 1895 and is still in active use, hosting opera, ballet & drama. Take a stroll around the building and enjoy its beautiful garden full of flowers and take lots of photos.

City centre
Head down to the city centre/old town of Zagreb. This is the perfect place to do some shopping! Zagreb has multiple shopping centers in the city. You will find both boutique shops and the familiar big chains in Zagreb. After you had enough of shopping head down towards the north side, Upper Town of the city. Optional stop: the beautiful cathedral of Zagreb, unfortunately is also under construction as of summer 2023.

Stone Gate
When you walk towards to Upper Town of Zabreb, you will pass the stone gate. This is not just a normal stone gate, but a famous religious site, a shrine to be exact. According to legend a great fire destroyed the wooden gate and only a painting (by an unknown painter) of the Virgin and Child survived. Therefore people consider the painting that survived as a miracle and you will see people here that light candles and pray. After taking photos take a break at the ‘time for wine’ restaurant for some wine or any other drinks depending on what time of the day it is (although I won’t judge you for drinking midday on your holiday ; ) )

St Mark’s church.
From the stone gate walk towards the St Mark’s church. This church is a famous landmark of Croatia and can be recognized by it’s roof that depicts the crests of Zagrab and Croatia. As of summer 2023 unfortunately it was under construction, however the beautiful iconic roof is still visible.

Ulica Ivana Tkalčića
In the evening head down to street (Ulica) Ivana Tkalčića. This charming street is the place to be in the evening, with lots of restaurant choices and some hip bars. We chose for some delicious lebanese food at Layali Lebanese Restaurant. If you want a more upscale experience go to Khala restaurant&bar.
