The Azores in Portugal are one of the best places in Europe to spot whales in the wild. The Atlantic Ocean has been home to a wide variety of marine animals for centuries. Of the 81 species of whales and dolphins worldwide, at least 28 can be found in the Azores.
While we only saw dolphins in Madeira, we finally spotted the whales we had long hoped to see in the Azores! 🐋 With a success rate of 98%, whale safaris are the most popular activity in the Azores. Whether you choose a zodiac or a catamaran, you can experience the Atlantic wildlife up close in an ethical manner in the Azores. 🕒 Best time: April-October – during this period, you can find the most diverse species of whales.
📍 Best locations: From São Miguel, Ponta Delgada or Vila Franca do Campo, as well as from the islands of Pico, Faial, and Terceira.
🚤 Type of boat: Zodiac or catamaran are the most common.
🌊 Time spent on the ocean: 3 to 4 hours, depending on how quickly you spot the whales.
