Don't miss out on one of the most spectacular glaciers in the whole world, when visiting Argentina or Chile.
This natural wonder isn't actually in Perito Moreno, but the Glacier is located in Los Glaciares National Park. The park is in the Santa Cruz province, which is in the south of Argentina and close to the border with Chile. The closest town to the Perito Moreno Glacier is El Calafate, which is known as the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park.
Whilst most glaciers in the world retreat, Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina is one of the few that is advancing. This means as the glacier grows in size, cracks and crevasses appear at the terminus, resulting in chunks of ice breaking off and crashing into the ice field below. Covering an area of over 250 square metres, as these dense masses of ice move from the glacier, they slowly carve into Lake Argentino depositing large icebergs.
Every 30 to 60 minutes, you will be able to watch these mini ruptures.
There are multiple options to visit the Perito Moreno Glacier.
The easiest and most accessible is to visit 'the viewpoint' by walking the 4kilometer boardwalk. The extensive system of wooden bridges allows you to walk for an hour or two and see the glacier from different angles.
If you like it a little bit more adventurous, you can also go by boat or kayak and view the south face of the glacier from Lago Argentino.
And last but not least, you can go trekking right on the glacier itself.
