Fiji has a lot more to offer than just picture-perfect beaches. And one of my personal favorite experiences is an unforgettable river rafting trip through the main island's tropical wilderness and plunging gorges.
Start early morning with a scenic drive in a 4WD open bus through Viti Levu's vibrant landscapes and deep into the heart of the island. Once at the river, you will receive a life vest and safety briefing from the local guides - and then it's time to jump into an inflatable raft and explore the Upper Navua river.
Winding through one of the most unique river canyons on earth, you will be surrounded by dark towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls and pristine rainforest. The challenging rapids will also guide you passed some remote in-land villages, where you might have the opportunity to meet some indigenous people (we encountered a local hunter who had caught a wild pig and was swimming back to the village, with the slaughtered pig on his back!).
A picnic lunch is provided, and there are several breaks to go for a refreshing swim or just sit and take in the spectacular scenery. The guides are extremely knowledgeable, so definitely take some time to ask questions and learn about the local ecology and Fijian culture.
Length: 24 km
Duration: full day, about 6 hours of actual rafting
