A one day trekking to Chachani basecamp (5.300 m) near Arequipa. This is a lighter variation to the trek of 2 days that would lead you all the way to the peak (6.070 m). Nevado Chachani is a fairly accessible volcano and the hiking up to basecamp is feasable for most hikers. If you want to go to the top, mountaineering experience is required.
How to get to the starting point?
Either you rent a 4x4 in Arequipa, or you arrange a guided tour in the centre of Arequipa. Near Plaza de Armas, a lot of tourist bureaus can offer a guided hike. This includes the 4x4 that will take you up to 4800 m. It is a bumpy ride on dirt roads, so we'd recommend going with a guide. Be sure to be already acclimatized to the height before starting this trek!
How long is the hike to basecamp?
The hike from the drop-off point to Chachani basecamp (5.300 m) takes about 2,5 hours single way. The hike is not difficult, but be careful! Walking uphill is challenging at such an elevation and it cannot be minimized.
What to expect?
Prepare for a hike that takes you close to the sun. Enjoy the surreal landscapes, the vastness of the mountains and their colours: orange, purple, blue, red and black and snowy white.
