Hiking tip for Madeira: the PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde
Activity
€ 1 - 50
The PR9 Levada do Caldeirão Verde is a special hike on the island of Madeira. It is a so-called Levada walk, which are walks along irrigation channels, making them mostly flat. This makes Levada hikes less intense than other hikes in the mountainous terrain of Madeira. This specific area of the forest near the PR9 is also known as Parque Florestal das Queimadas. At the beginning of the route, near the parking lot, there is a picturesque old building, Casa de Abrigo das Queimadas, with features of the traditional Santana houses, such as the thatched roof. You will naturally pass by this building on the route from the parking lot to the PR9 trail.
The Levada do Caldeirão Verde is located in the Laurissa forest, and the tropical plants create an atmosphere resembling a jungle. Along the way, you will also encounter several tunnels, but these can be easily navigated with the flashlight on your phone. The hike is 8.7 kilometers one-way and ends at a beautiful waterfall, the Ribeiro do Caldeirão Verde. This impressive waterfall is 100 meters high, and if you dare, you can even take a dip in the water! From here, you walk back along the same route.
