Kinsa Cocha means "three lakes" in Quechua. Hidden between the rough and peaky mountain tops you can find these three cochas, but also small creeks and a lot of alpacas.
Get hold of a taxi in the small town of Písac, near Cusco. The destination is Kinsa Cocha and you will get there by following a winding road that passes 'Parque de la papa' where they grow and cherish ancient types of potatoes. You also pass the Amaru Village. When you have reached the starting point of Kinsa Cocha after about 45 minutes in the taxi, there will probably be some members of the Amaru community who sell handmade tapestries and other kinds of weavings. It is important that you talk to the taxi driver about your way back. You can either ask him to wait for you while you explore the lakes, or agree on a specific time that he will come back to pick you up.
There is no really official designated hiking path, the walk around the lake is self-guided. The hike around the first lake is fairly obvious, but to get to the second and third lake (Azul Cocha and Puma Cocha) you will have to follow the goat / llama trails. We decided to only explore the first two lakes.
This is a truly amazing hidden gem in the Sacred Valley and one of my favourite hikes that I did three times in total. Each time the jagged and rough mountains greeted me it felt more familiar. These ancient apus - the grandfathers of the Peruvians - are beautiful and carry some of the region's oldest stories. Hear them and treasure them
