Senegal

Dakar and Ngor Island

We began the morning with a visit to the Monument de la Renaissance Africaine, an impressive symbol overlooking Dakar. Afterwards, we decided to spend the rest of the day on Ngor Island, a peaceful little escape just off the coast. Only a few minutes by boat from the city, the island felt like a world apart — calm, colorful and full of charm.

Monument of the African Renaissance

Visiting the Monument of the African Renaissance was quite interesting, and it offers a stunning view over the city of Dakar. The monument is truly impressive, and the best part is that it’s easy to access — no major detours needed. An hour here is more than enough to take in the sights and appreciate its grandeur. This adventure in Senegal was made possible in collaboration with Brussels Airlines, which offers direct flights from Brussels to Dakar.

Ngor Island

If you're in Dakar, make sure to spend a day or even just part of a day on Ngor Island, just a short boat ride away. The round-trip boat fare is only 1000 CFA per person. The beach on the Dakar side is beautiful, with colorful local boats floating peacefully, and across the way, you can see Ngor Island. As the saying goes, "land looks better from the sea", and it’s true! But once you get to Ngor, you'll realize that Dakar itself is beautiful too. On Ngor, there are no cars, and that's part of its charm: the calm, the peacefulness. Here, life slows down. There are plenty of little bars and restaurants with terraces and loungers where you can soak up the country’s amazing weather, especially during the dry season. Wander around the island, explore the local artisan shops, and don't forget to enjoy some fresh fish of the day, which is a real treat! For the more active types, there are world-class surfing spots. Ngor is a true surf paradise, with famous waves like Ngor Left and Ngor Right. If you don’t have your own gear, don’t worry, you can easily rent everything you need right on the island. What I really loved about Ngor is how quiet it still is, with relatively few people around, making the experience even more enjoyable. Overall, spending a day on Ngor is a great way to start or end your trip around Senegal. I highly recommend it!
