Something you should put on your bucket list: experience the beautiful Champagne region by bike. I hired bikes from Facil-e-bike in Epernay. Definitely consider renting an e-bike because of the hills in the area. There's a lovely route of about 35-40 kilometres that takes you through endless vineyards, quaint villages and along the quiet Marne river.
From Epernay, head towards the Marne river and follow the signposted cycle route to the left. From here follow the signs to Hautvilliers, a picture postcard town. The two kilometre climb up to the town is well worth it! It's the ideal place for your first stop, to have a drink and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. You can even explore the abbey where the famous Dom Pérignon is buried.
Continue your journey by descending through the vineyards to Cumières and then to Daméry. The route then climbs to Fleury-la-Rivière, rewarding you with breathtaking views of the Champagne countryside. Although these hills can be a challenge, with your e-bike they become a fun adventure.
From Fleury-la-Rivière, descend to Reuil, where the gentle Marne River greets you. Turn left here and head back towards Epernay. For about 15 kilometres, you cycle along the river through idyllic villages.
Back in Epernay, it's time to return the bikes. Take a moment to relax in the small but beautiful park where the rental is located. And what better way to end this amazing day than with a champagne tasting on the prestigious Avenue de Champagne? Cheers!
